Purity: Method of Salat al‑Wahshah (Prayer for the First Night)

Ruling 627:
It is recommended that on the first night of burial, the two rakʿah prayer known as ‘salat al‑waḥshah’ be performed for the deceased. The method of performing this prayer is as follows: in the first rakʿah after reciting Sūrat al-Hamd, Ayat al-Kursi[1] is recited once; and in the second rakʿah after reciting Sūrat al-Ḥamd, Sūrat al-Qadr is recited ten times; and after the salām of the prayer [i.e. after completing the prayer], the following is said:
اَللّٰهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَیٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ، وَٱبْعَثْ ثَوَابَهَا إِلَىٰ قَبْرِ ___
allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa āli muḥammad, wab ʿath thawābahā ilā qabri ___
O Allah! Bless Muḥammad and the progeny of Muḥammad, and send the reward of this [prayer] to the grave of ___.
In the blank space, one should say the name of the deceased person.

With regard to reciting Ayat al-Kursi, the obligatory precaution is to recite verses 255–257 of Chapter 2 of the Qur’an (Minhāj al‑Ṣāliḥīn, vol. 1, p. 346, Ruling 964).
