Banking: Taking Customer Change Left with Bank Staff**
English:
Question #1928:
Some bank employees, whose job is to receive payments from customers to settle their electricity and water bills, are left with some money over and above the bills’ amounts. For example, some customers do not demand the change back. Is it permissible for the employee to have such money for himself?
Answer #1928:
The extra money should go to those who paid it in the first instance. The recipient should return the funds to their rightful owners if he knew them. Otherwise, they should be treated as money of an anonymous owner. Therefore, it is not permissible for the employee to take it for himself unless he is sure that the owners gave him the money by way of gift or have given it up.
